Faux Wraps & Secret Slits - The Madrid Dress
I am always thinking of ways to add fun twists to my makes. This time was no different as I finally tried this slit hack that had been on my list for as long as I can remember.
Pattern - The Madrid Dress
I had the opportunity to make The Madrid Dress by Coffee & Thread as part of an Instagram blog tour. This was my first faux wrap dress even though I have made multiple wrap dresses. The Madrid Dress is described as a Bohemian inspired faux wrap dress or tunic with tiered skirt options, and features a side zipper.
As usual, my mind began to run wild about how to best express myself with this pattern. Once I chose the fabric I wanted to make it out of, the “secret zipper slit” hack followed. Inspiration for the zipper slit was from an African designer, Ofuure. I bought the floral viscose poplin fabric from Blackbird fabrics.
Pattern Modifications
I only made a couple of changes to the pattern:
I added pockets because why not?
I added a slit to the front of the dress. The twist is that the slit can be zipped closed! So instead of having a traditional slit which is permanent, i chose to add a zipper. That way, I can zip it down when I simply want to wear it as a midi dress or zip it up a little for a date-night or whatever occasion or mood calls for it.
Small additions here and there, and off a sudden I have a new dress in my closet! This feeling of excitement and pride cannot be described. Very happy with how this turned out and hoping to make more when…no IF I get the time. Sew many ideas, sew little time.
Happy Sewing,
