Floral Dreams- My Summer Day Top Hack
Dresses are my favorite thing to wear and make but due to seasonal changes, I do not get to wear them as much as I want to. So when summer comes around you already know that I am ready to sew my long list of dresses to rock all summer long. This time, I hacked a top pattern to achieve the summer dress of my dreams.
Fabric Details
When I got this dreamy rayon poplin in the mail, I could not believe how incredibly soft it was and the drape was to die for. This coral fabric called ‘Lillium’ is one of three exclusive designs by Katie Kortman in collaboration with D&H Fabrics. I wanted the fabric pattern to take centre stage and knew exactly what I wanted to make right away.
Pattern & Hacking Options
I used the ‘Summer Day Top’ pattern by Made Everyday for the bodice of this dress. It is a simple boxy top and very beginner friendly. I love it because there are no darts or closures which makes it quite a quick sew.
The pattern comes with a peplum top as one of the multiple variations it offers so you can simply lengthen the peplum, and voila you have a dress! That is one way of achieving this look.
For this dress I simply doubled the width of the bodice waist measurement and cut it to my desired length. Then I added side ties to give the dress a little more shape. That’s all I did. As I always say, hacking a pattern can be as simple as lengthening or shortening it. One summer dress down, a lot more to go!
Happy Sewing,
Sylvia
