Summer Stash-buster Dress (M8035)
What do you do when you have about 1 meter each of three different colored fabrics? You make a color-block stashbuster dress right? Well I decided to do just that and I’m pretty stocked with the final results.
Pattern – M8035 (aka #brynnmccalls) by McCalls Pattern Company
About the pattern – This pattern features a faux wrap front bodice, elastic raised waist, and sleeve variations which includes tulip style sleeve or elastic hem puff sleeves. There are also options for a hemline ruffle, straight ankle length, and even a side slit feature. The pattern is rated as easy, with the very easy to follow instructions.
Fabric used – Spotted lightweight viscose in black/white, navy/ecru, and ecru/black from Blackbird Fabrics. I bought this last year and it isn’t available anymore but they do have some pretty cool fabrics as well.
My measurements – Bust:40” Waist:34” Hips:45”
Size & view made – Size L, View B
Modifications – I sewed down the center from to reduce chances of too much cleavage. Then I shortened the sleeves by about 3inches for a ¾” sleeve look. I also cut the skirt hem on a slight curve so when I attached the ruffle, the curve was highlighted for a fun look. Finally, I fully lined the bodice instead of using facings as instructed, and use 1/2” elastic for the waist.
What I liked/disliked – I initially cut out the skirt as a maxi dress but for several factors, I chose to got with a midi length in the end. One of the reasons was that the skirt pattern is a little too straight for me even after gathering the waist. Next time, I will grade out the hips a little (by about 2 inches) to have more flare around my hips.
Happy Sewing,
Sylvia XOXO
