Saturday Skirt Set - Pattern Review

Saturday Skirt Set - Pattern Review

Cheers to my first blog post of 2023! Woohoo! We are deep in Winter season over here but truthfully, Spring has been on my mind so I decided to make a matching set to lift my spirits. The Saturday Skirt Set pattern seemed to be the best choice so I decided to give it a go and now I’m happy to share more details.

Pattern: Saturday Skirt Set by Friday Pattern Company. It is made up of a wrap-top and a midi skirt. The wrap-top features long sleeves brought in at the hem with elastic while the a-line skirt has a flat front waistband and an elastic back waistband, with roomy pockets.

Size Range: XS - 7X (32” - 60” chest; 34” - 63” hips)

Fabric used: Viscose Crepe

My body measurements: 41.5” bust, 34.5” waist, 44.5” hips

Size made: Bodice - size L. Skirt - M at the waist, graded to L at the hips.

Pattern adjustments made:

  • Shortened skirt by 3 inches (before hemming) to achieve midi length. For reference, I am 5”4.

  • Shortened the sleeves by about 3 inches. This wasn’t by choice. I had 3 meters of fabric and was barely able to cut all pieces. I had to go with shorter sleeves for it to work.

  • I sewed through my waist elastic to keep it in place. I recommend doing this or getting non-roll elastic.

  • Grading pattern from M at the waist to L in the hips based on my measurements. I usually decide what size works best for me based on finished garment measurements. Because of the elastic in the back of the skirt, I could have stuck with size L and it would have been totally fine. The bodice size chart put me in size XL but the L finished garment measurements fit closer to my measurements so decided to go with that size since it is a wrap top and I’m glad I did. I still get really great coverage.

More feedback:

I love how this turned out and how versatile these pieces are as they can be worn separately. They were both really easy to sew. Friday Pattern Co has sew-alongs to all their patterns on YouTube so that is a great resource especially for visual learners. I watched the videos before sewing and barely looked at the instructions after that.

Although the pattern shows images and illustrations with the top tied in the front, I find that that doesn’t give me as much coverage and I’d like so I am probably always going to tie it in the back unless I have other layering pieces.

Those deep pockets had me dancing! I love pockets but don’t always install them in my dresses and skirts depending on what kind of silhouette I want but oh my gosh these pockets just make sense!

Pay attention to fabric suggestions for this one! I had 3 meters of fabric and it was barely enough. I had to play fabric tetris but the good thing is I didn’t have a lot of scraps left.

Overall, this is a beautiful pattern and would 100% recommend it especially for beginners looking for something stylish and fun. For most people, it’ll require less fitting because of the wrap-top feature and elasticated waistband skirt. I call that a win!

Happy sewing,

Sylvia XOXO
