Welcome to my blog! I created ‘The Ravel Out’ to capture my makes while I unravel my sewing ideas, one stitch at a time.

Ravel (out)

verb

  1. unravel; untangle.

  2. undo (twisted, knitted, or woven threads).

DIY Asymmetrical Waist Dress

DIY Asymmetrical Waist Dress

Started off the year sewing a fun dress I have had on my Pinterest board for quite a bit. A few months ago, I came across a pattern company with a very similar pattern to the dress and now here we are! I am honestly impressed with how well this turned out. This was my first time trying a Grasser Pattern so I had no idea what I was getting myself into but it’s safe to say there was not much to worry about.

Pattern: Grasser, No 937

Size Range: Sizes 38 to 56 which 29.9” to 44.1” bust. In terms of size inclusivity, it’s far from it considering I fall close to the end of their chart and my bust is 41”. It is important to note that this company only sells each size separately which seems to be common with Russian pattern companies.

Size made: I made a size 52. For reference, my measurements are 41” bust, 34.5” waist, 45” hips

Fabric: l used linen for this version. For this design, any fabric with a bit of body/weight and drape would work beautifully.

Adjustments made:

  • Length - I knew right away that I wanted a shorter dress and also wanted to eliminate the final gathered tier for this dress. I did not have a specific method for doing this. I completely eliminated the final tier of the skirt, then attempted to level out and straighten the hem directly on the pattern piece. Once I was able to try the dress on, I adjusted the hem until my desired hem length and shape.

Other thoughts:

  • Construction: This was surprisingly much easier and simpler than I thought it would be. The pattern is beautifully made and well though out in my opinion, providing very clean finishing both on the inside and outside of the dress. I actually enjoyed hand stitching the waist portion WHO AM I?!? Trying to get the hem somewhat straight is what took a while for me because as you can see in the pattern line drawing, the gathered tiers are supposed to be asymmetrical too.

  • Pattern Instructions: I honestly feel I cannot give a full review of this as I have a bad habit of skimming instructions and not fully reading them. One thing I will say is that I struggled with the method used in installing the zipper. The zipper slit in the skirt does not go all the way to the hem as I am assuming it looks cleaner maybe? I have to say, I struggled getting a really good zipper installation using that method (I definitely need some practice). After taking these photos, I decided to go back and sew the zipper seam all the way to the hem. Old habits die hard right?

  • Sewing level - I honestly thing an ambitious beginner can make this. Once you are comfortable with gathering, facing, zipper installation, you’re good to go!

I’m hoping to sew a few more fun garments this year. We’ll see how that goes.

Happy Sewing,

Sylvia XOXO
