Fall In Love - The Effie Shirt Dress
I have a soft spot for shirt dresses so it is no surprise that will be one of the first things I make now that the weather is cooling down and I’m reaching for more transitional pieces. Shirt dresses are an easy way to almost instantly look ‘put together’. Whether it’s a loose or fit and flare style, it’s hard to go wrong with them. So of course I jumped on the opportunity to get an early copy of Michelle’s new pattern, the Effie Shirt Dress.
Pattern Details
The Effie Shirt Dress by Michelle Sews Patterns is described as having a straight cut profile. It features a hidden button placket, two different pocket styles, and two fabric belt styles with an opportunity to play with contrasting fabrics.
The pattern is available in sizes 6 - 30, in B and D cups (i.e. up to size 57” bust, 64” hips). I made a size 16 (B cup) based on my current body measurements - bust 41”, waist 34.5”, hips 45”. I used this gorgeous linen fabric because I wanted a slight structure to the dress and this was the perfect choice for it.
Please note: I received a copy of the early release in addition to compensation. This means it had been tested by pattern testers but changes were still ongoing i.e. it was not the final copy of the pattern. The official copy is being released today! This review is my honest opinion.
It was a pretty straight forward sewing process although I had to pay close attention to the button placket steps as this was the first time I was making a hidden placket (I know!). If you’ve made a hidden placket before, used the burrito method to turn a shirt inside out, and have installed button/buttonholes, this project will be a breeze for you. If not, consider it a welcomed challenge.
As someone who has a personal preference for illustrated images in instructions, it is important to note that this one has photos. The early copy had a printed fabric for the photos which can make it not as easy to see details sometimes. I am not sure what the final version will have so I will update once I find out. UPDATE: The photos in the final final copy is a plain fabric so much easier to see details!
Pattern Adjustments/Changes
I shortened my dress by 4.5”
Sadly, I didn’t have enough fabric so could not make a fabric belt but considering I’ll probably wear this dress without a belt on most occasions, I’m not bothered. I hope this gives you a brief overview of the pattern.
Happy Sewing!
