Welcome to my blog! I created ‘The Ravel Out’ to capture my makes while I unravel my sewing ideas, one stitch at a time.

Ravel (out)

verb

  1. unravel; untangle.

  2. undo (twisted, knitted, or woven threads).

My Little Black Jacquard Dress

My Little Black Jacquard Dress

I have a couple black dresses but none as versatile as this one. It was obviously time to change that. I made this simple yet beautiful tiered dress. Of course I hacked a pattern to achieve this look and I am going to make a short and sweet post about all the adjustments I made.

Pattern Details

Base pattern: Tilly Blouse pattern by Fibremood

Size made: Size 12

My measurements: 40.5”bust, 34”waist, 44.5”hips

Fabric: Jacquard (63% viscose, 33% poly, 4% elastane)

PS. I made this garment as part of a paid collaboration with Fibremood + Polytex Stoffen + Mettler Thread

Pattern Adjustments

1. Shortened bodice to my desired length (which was about 1.5” above the notch at the waist for me)

Shortened bodice at the line marked above the notch

2. Added tiers - I measured the waist of the bodice once I had it sewn up and multiplied it by 2 to determine the fabric waistline for the first gathered tier (multiply it by 3 if your fabric is lightweight). The second tier gather is twice the measurement of the first tier’s waistline.

Here is a breakdown of mine:

  • Bodice waist once sewn - 35”

  • First tier - 35” * 2 = 70”

  • Second tier = 70” * 2 = 140”

The height of both tiers is 10.5” long. I didn’t hem mine since the edge of my second tier is the selvedge, I chose not to hem it but make sure to add seam allowance to the hem.

3. Sleeves - I shortened the sleeves and added an elastic to the hem.

Easy peasy hack right? I love it paired with the belt and paired without too so I am going to let my mood decide whenever I wear it.

Happy sewing,

Sylvia XOXO
